Youre answer will vary on here. It really depends on the golfer and the power of there swing but typically there is an average distance for each of your irons

These are my average yardage usage

9 iron 100-150yards
8iron 130-160
7iron 150-180
6iron 180-190
5iron 180-190 depends on the loft I need
4iron 180-200
3iron 200+

It's different for everybody. There's a great site that asks important questions like height, weight and various other questions to deteremine your best club. Also, it tells you what a strong shot and weak shot will do, to counteract wind. Check out the attached website...

go to the range and hit each iron, practice, practice, practice until you know which club to use in a situation.
