what hurts the most in a person is a rumor that has spread to inform others of something you did that may affect your reputation.

are you very concerned about what sort of gossip people will talk about behind your back, or only what your friends will think?

rumors are like smog and smoke, most are untrue
most sensible people with a decent brain and a social life will disbelieve rumors as nothing more than a waste of time.

ask yourself, is reputation among people that you arent friends with a big concern?
let the rumor go and passed, more effort should be placed on who started it and how to deal with that person.

Well, honestly stopping a rumor is like stopping an avalanche. so, you know that you aren't going out with whoever, so simply tell people when They ask you about it, if they do. Getting mad about it usually doesn't help, but being smart while everyone else believes the dumb rumor usually works. don't fuel the fire with weird behavior. and if it gets to a point where it is damaging, then is the time to take some more dramatic action.
