My parents are planning an engagement party for my new fiance and I? Should we register for gifts before this event or wait until the bridal shower? We are planning a long engagement, wedding is 2 years away.

No, I wouldnt. Engagment gifts are usually very small, like a trinket of some sort or money. No one is going to be giving you a toaster oven. Wait until about 6 months before your wedding and register for your shower.

My husband and I were engaged for almost 2 years before we got married. We didn't register until a few months before the wedding, but we didn't have an engagement party either.

I'm not sure what the etiquette is on engagement parties since they aren't that common where I live. You may want to register for a few things before the party for those guests who may decide to give you something.

I'd leave the majority of registering until closer to the wedding as stores discontinue items and get new items all the time. You'd hate to register for crystal or linens only to have them discontinued in 6 months.

I had this happen to me. I registered for emerald green towels. I received 2 bath, 2 hand and 2 wash clothes as a gift. Shortly after our wedding I went to purchase 2 more of each only to discover that this particular shade of green had been discontinued. I've looked for the last 6 years and I can't find the same shade of green anywhere!

I would wait and register before the shower. Not everyone gets gifts for people for an engagement party. Plus, that would look like you're expecting gifts for engagement, shower AND wedding. Just invite your friends to the engagement party and let them celebrate this wonderful occasion with you. Register later...

P.S. Congrats!

Absolutly register. Even if no one gets you gifts at the engagement party - you and your fiance have 2 years of other festivities (birthdays, holidays, etc) that people can use the registry to purchase a gift. Unless the two of you already live together, I would stick to the essentials for now - cause your tastes/style may change in two years. Have FUN!!!
P.S. Don't try to do several stores all in one day - my husband was ready to kill me after 1 store ;)

It depends. In jewish culture teh registry is mainly used for engagement presents and bridal shower presents. Most guests typically give money at Jewish weddings

YES - definitely register for that event. People are going to buy you something, anyway, it might as well be something you want!

You could register now, but it's pretty far away. You may want something different from what you want now. Good luck!
