it means god is the greatest.
hu is not a word, allah is the root word. allahu, is because we have dashes at the end of the word like a vowel, dashes are used to highlight the word grammatical; position in the sentence.
it could be allhi, allaha in different sentences.
thats all what hu is doing there.
hope tht helps.

ALLAH u Akbar means God is the Greatest in Arabic. It's what we say at the start of prayer, when we bow, when we prostrate ourselves, when we take the sitting position, again when we prostrate, and when we stand up for the next Rakah(unit).

The takbir is an Arabic name for the phrase Allāhu Akbar الله أكبر, a common Arabic expression, which can be translated as "God is Great," or "God is (the) greatest."

The obvious ignorant people don't know its GREATEST not greater...

It means, "Our god (allah) is greater"

The question begs, greater than what? When one considers that allah was originally one of a pantheon of 365 gods and Mohammed chose allah as the strongest, then the statement makes more sense. its origin is pagan and its essence is pagan...as is all of Islam in essence, despite what they borrowed and stole from the Jews and Christians.
