they do this for several reasons. one- they dont have sweat galnds. two- just like us, they pant to pull in more air. three- they love to smile (jk, but it might be true). four- some dogs like bulldogs pant to remove drool from their mouths. five- it keeps their mouth moist.

Dogs can pant for several reasons, not just particularly to cool off. If you listen closely, you'll hear the differences in the pant. One is, naturally, because they have no sweat glands. Another is that they are simply content. Another one still will tell you that they're getting excited about something. While another will tell you that they're nervous or fearful of something. When a dog pants, it's Always for a reason, but not necessarily for the same reason each time. It's good to learn to differenciat these different types because they can be major clues as to how your dog is feeling at any given time, and also a good clue as to when you should correct certain behaviors before they escalate into more than just panting.

Dogs pant when they are warm, excited or stressed so panting can mean a lot of things. Dogs can not sweat so they cool themselves down by panting and if a dog is unsure about something they pant. If you get out a lead a dog is likely to get excited and start to pant

Why do dogs pant when they are not tired?

The answer is that dogs sometimes pant just to keep cooled off.

When your body temperature gets too high, you sweat. Evaporation of water takes up a lot of heat. Evaporation of sweat from your skin helps cool your body when its temperature begins to get too high.

Dogs (and cats, too) are pretty well covered with hair and have very little bare skin. They can’t keep cool by sweating—except maybe a little from the pads of their feet. Instead, a dog pants. That moves air rapidly back and forth over the moist tissues of its mouth and tongue.

Panting is the dog’s way of evaporating extra water to help keep its body cool

They can't perspire, so they pant. It works the same way by cooling their bodies off. Sure, they pant when it's not really hot weather. I bet you sweat below 90 degrees too!

It's the same reason why you and I started huffing and puffing when we're tired. It also cools them of in some way. It also could be a from of 'heavy breathing'. If you are running around for a long time, you start to sweat and get tired/start 'panting'. Dogs do the same!

Dogs pant not only to regulate their body temperature, but also when they are excited, or having trouble breathing. When they are having trouble breathing, it can be for different reasons, including some congestion from a cold, or because of the structure of their breathing passages. The dogs with "smushed in" faces can tend to pant more often than dogs with longer muzzles.

Dogs don't have sweat glands like humans so they need a way to relieve the heat.

My dog also pants when he has not drank enough, is excited, or has been playing or running around.

It's to cool them selves off. Dog's can't sweat much, except through their paws so they have to cool their body's off some how so they pant!
