Traditionally, you are suppose to retain it until washing it off after sundown.

There's no time limit. You can wash them off whenever you want. There is a man at my church who went to the men's room right after mass and immediately washed them off; because he felt that walking around with ashes on his forehead contradicted the Gospel reading for Ash Wednesday. It said that you shouldn't walk around letting everyone know that you pray, fast, give to charity, etc., and that if he went around with ashes on his forehead, everyone would know he went to Mass.

There is nothing specific about how long to wear your ashes. You probably shouldn't go get them just to go home and wash them off, but at the same time, there's nothing that says you CAN'T wash them off if you have a good reason to.

For what it's worth, I got mine yesterday morning and pretty much left them alone until I washed my face before going to bed, just like usual.

I dunno, but last night while waiting for our order at Chili's, I was aksing my fiance' "Whats with all the stupid forhead stickers?"
Guess I didn't have my glasses on.........

Anyway. as a Christian - not a catholic, the whole concept of people crossing themselves, confessing to man rather than god and wearing symbols such as a cross on the forhead of ash placed by a holy man - is nonsense. My fiance' is also a catholic but not devout - and I am thankful he did not embarrass me with that rediculous idolistic symbol.

I wear my cross too, but unlike many - do not believe in crossing myself, kissing my cross, and other nonsensicle symbols.......

My advice? God will not judge you whether you wish to look rediculous on JUST Wednesday or the rest of the week.
Hygenically speakin - I'd never dirty my face with ash.
My make up is dirty enough and gets washed off every 12 hours.

Good Luck -

Meg -

You don't wear them...they are bestowed upon you. No time limit or, just do what you do naturally,,,they have to fall off.
