To protect them from drying. When we are awake we wink and by this we lubricate the eyes. when we are asleep we do not wink so we must close the eyes. Another reason is to protect them from any outside factor that can affect them without us noticing, like dust or sand.

* note that it says usually. I think that it (closing of the eyes) is to reduce stimulus for the sleepers mind that he can enter sleeping state more easily.

And of course when you are really tired your eyes close by themselves so it would be hard for you to sleep with them open. And that would probably indicate some kind of a medical condition.

Because it blocks out the light. And your eyes are closed while you are sleeping.
