ok. I'm running a mile at states this weekend. I know I'm not going to win, unless many people get sick or die between now and then. I want to do my best, so what should I think about before and during the race that'll make me run better than my personal record.

You are in the perfect position to have the race of your life. It's races where the expectations are low that you can just say to yourself..."Who cares?" and go out and just run. My friend used to tell me to do the 3rd lap first and get the slowest one over with. That would make me smile everytime I'd come down the straight away to start my third lap. Think about doing your best. If a negative thought comes into your head (pain, discomfort, etc...), take a deep breath and start gaining on the guy in front of you. What do you have to lose? Go out and have a good time!

what u think about to prepare for the race is much more important than what u think about during the race. to run ur best time you have to visualize where u want to be during the race at each part. if u have spare time before the race set a goal and find several people who run similar times as your goal so that while u are running you will know who u want to b behind and in front of at the end of each lap

Remember that your running for yourself. When people are passing you try to think of it in a positive way. When I find someone surpassing me in something I'm trying to become great at I always try and think - that's where I'll be in a few months, or next year, because all my hard work will pay off.
Cheer yourself on the whole time, and set small goals - I'm going to push myself to that next turn, then the next turn. Just keep pushing yourself a bit at a time and soon enough you'll have passes the finish. I find focusing on a piece is easier then imagining the whole mile.

I usually think about a song, usually just any song close to what the rythem of my feet sound like. If not think about anything that will get your mind off of any pains because the pains WILL emphasize in the race. Toward the end think that you are unstopable and cannot be beat and that this will all be over soon. Think that when it is over you could have wished you gave more because you have no pains.

If you're not tired, think about pacing yourself or even getting to the finish line. If you're getting tired, imagine a whole bunch of your favorite drink at the end to keep you going. Or try to keep a goal in mind. These work most of the time, at least for me.

Michael Jordan always meditaed before games about himself knocking down 3's and slamming in dunks.. He said that it always paid off. Maybe that would work for you? I do this also for soccer and listen to some motivational music. It really helps! Good luck.

Oh, I feel terrible.
I wish I hadn't eaten that pizza today at lunch.
Man, I wish I hadn't eaten the third piece.
I think I'm going to throw up soon.
What's that funny taste in my throat?
Boy, my feet hurt. I wish I had worn high socks like my Dad told me to wear. I think I have a blister on the back of my heel.
Hey, who is that coming up behind me? Is it Vince McNally lapping me? How humiliating!
Oh well, only 6 laps to go. I'll catch up to him later (in the afterlife)
Well, at least my parents and girlfriend are here.
Oh, what's that feeling I'm getting?
Could it be diarrhea?

When I run, I think about how good I am going to feel when I am done, or when I have accomplished my goal. Just make a small goal for yourself, and start there.

If you see a person close to you, think "just another few steps and I can pass him/her." Every person you pass is another step closer to winning (or at least coming close). Just think win, win, win.
