No....the GPS signal is free for all to use...for now... if you can pick it up....but....many companies do offer upgrades to their software for a fee at specific times of the year....upgrades?...why you ask. When new roads are built, highways expanded or changed then your software won't know it. As an example I live in CA and this last week I was traveling up highway 99 in the Central Valley. This highway is being upgraded and shifted a little to the side....about 100 yards. While I was driving my GPS thought I was off the pavement and warned me of it...kind of funny actually. You don't need upgrades that often unless you are using it for commercial purposes like deliveries and such. It's been 2 years for me and I'll probably wait 1 more before upgrading.

Usually if you add an aftermarket system you do. My car came with a navigational system from the factory and I do not have to have a subscription for it and it does not cost anything extra.

No. However, some systems have traffic updates to show which roads are blocked or congested. In that case, you do need to subscribe.

Like someone else said, you can have that Live Updated Traffic as well, which will cost you I believe, but it shouldn't drain your pockets, just a couple extra bucks a month, if you can spare any...
