Which is totally aggrevating for many reasons, but the main reason is the dam activation. Since i have put xp on this system 7 or 8 timesthey want a new activation #. I've finally got this dam thing running good and im on a record of 10 days. I dont wanna spend another 100 on another activation key. A bunch of crap anyway. Considering xp is 5 years old. Really apprecate a good answer.

If you can download sp2 to a CD (even if it's from another computer), I would seriously try to update the PC that's crashing to service pack 2. The only other problem is, if you're system is not coming up as Genuine you won't be able to download updates from Windows Updates.

Do you have the original Product Key for your XP copy? If you do, try downloading the Product Key Updater Tool and use that to validate your copy. Here's a link: http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/pkuinstructions.aspx

Good luck!

Updating to SP2 is probably a good first step. It has many many critical fixes, plus you will have access to every patch they have released since then. I am sure installing all of the critical updates is a step in the right direction. If after all of that it still crashes on you, I would start looking at hardware...starting with RAM.

If it's crashing that often and truly needing reinstalled, then either 1) you've got some bad hardware in there somewhere, memory, hard drive, etc. or 2) you're installing shifty software that's breaking your system.

Call Microsoft and explain the situation, they may be able to "renew" your activation key.

If you have problems activating, then just call the number. I have done it a few times and its a piece of cake. They just ask you to verify a couple of questions and you are all set. I just play dumb and act like a moron.
