Without seeing the piece its hard ot say anything definate. Have you been in the sun recently? Certain colours react to sun exposure badly and can swell up and become tender. Reds and Black are prone to this. Make sure there isnt any other areas besides your tattoo that have the same feeling, like someone said it could be something totally different that just happens to be at the site of your tattoo.

First step take a benadryl, it will calm your body down with regards to the tenderness etc. Go to an artist and have them take a look. They cna tell you immediately if its anything more than just your body settling itself. All the cells in the body are completely regererated every 7 years so those in your tattoo might be having their turn and your ink might be reacting.

IF they dont have any answers for you go to a dermatologist or your GP. It is not likely to be an infection because of the amount of time you have had it, but not every doctor has any clue about tattoos. IF they even suggest this go get a second opinion.

Is it just the tattoo, and not any of the skin around it? And all of the tattoo? Is there any inflamed skin involved? Any exposure to allergens in the last few days (food, animals, wild flora, etc)?

One thing I've noticed is it's easy to have something odd going on and assume it's the inked area. This happened to me a few months ago when I got poison oak; I automatically assumed something was up with the tat. It wasn't until I had a doctor look at it that he identified what was happening (and was not even judgmental about the tattoo, a nice change) that he pointed out surrounding areas that also had a rash effect & parts of the tattoo that didn't have anything.

Of course, it probably wouldn't hurt to check with a doctor if it concerns you. I'd do so regardless if it lasted more than a day or so.
