An idiot for the rest of your life is a bit melodramatic. Sure you'll feel a little low but there are plenty more opportunities if it doesn't work. The main thing is to be assertive and just say how you feel - tell her you really like her! If she thins that is strange or is just flattered, then move on. If you don't ask, you will never know!
