No, absolutely not.

Eating raw chicken has its problems- namely Campylobacter and Salmonella. These two bacteria are found frequently on raw chicken and will give you a whopper of a case of diarrhea. That's the best case scenario with these... People can get severely ill and may have to be hospitalized with them.

Never, never, never eat raw pork. In addition to the bacteria that can cause a gastroenteritis, there are occasionally parasites that live in the muscles. If you eat them (Trichinella spiralis) you can get these too. Pork are inspected in the US, but why take the risk.

Raw beef is a tad safer, but not 100%, esp. given the rise in E. coli O:157H:7 that we have been seeing. Cows (like people) naturally have E. coli in their intestines. Most flavors of E. coli don't cause people to have problems. Sometimes a bad one takes up shop in the guts. These don't hurt the cow, they just go along for the ride. Slaughter houses have a standard of cleanliness... but accidents happen. Think about this... inside the animal are pounds and pounds of E. coli rich stools. They try to keep the guts separate from the meat cuts.... You get the picture. Even if the E. coli I mentioned above isn't present there are others that can cause diarrhea and vomiting. I haven't mentioned yet a parasite that can get into many meats- toxoplasma gondii. It can infect virtually any warm-blooded critter, including people. These form little parasite balls (cysts) anywhere (including brains!). Fortunately this is relatively rare in the US.

Rare steak is okay-ish because searing the outside kills the problem bacteria. These guys have a hard time making it into the center of the meat cut. Ground beef is different as the bacteria have no problem nesting in the center of your beef patty.

Hopefully I didn't scare you away from meats. A rare steak is delicious now and then. But always cook your chicken, pork, and ground beef all the way to well done.

NO...raw meats can contain harmful bacteria. They should always be cooked thoroughly to avoid food poisoning.

Why would you choose to eat raw meat? It certainly won't help you.

Not very efficient. Raw meat is harder to digest than cooked meat, not to mention harder to eat. Also, raw meat will not provide you with all of the nutrients you need to remain healthy.

Well cavemen were lucky to live to the golden old age of 35. Then they discovered fire... kept them warm, cooked the bacteria out of their foods. If you want the real scoop on the meat packing industry, read the book 'Fast Food Nation' by Eric Schlosser.
