Oh, my! going up to spend some of summer vacation with my grandparents in Sonoma, California.
This was an oasis of calm and sanity and love for me from a home that was a storm of fury, cold anger, resentment and insanity (literally). My dad is bipolar and he and my mom fought hellacious screaming, abusive fights almost every night. My dad, who basically hated women, encouraged my brothers to torment me.
When I went up to my grandma and grandpa during the summer, it was like paradise. No one screaming at each other or screaming at me. No hitting. No being made to feel like cr@p. They loved me, they told me so, they enjoyed spending time with me. Didn't matter what we did-- from throwing rocks up into the air at twilight for the bats to swoop down on (you had to have been there) to going for walks together, to helping my grandma cook in the kitchen or going with grandpa to the dump in his old pick-up truck, it was the best.
When I was 12-1/2, my grandpa died and that all ended. I left home 3-1/2 years later because I couldn't stand it anymore.
Sonoma summers...best memories of my childhood. *sigh*
