Well my dear. Its sounds a bit like toothache what you have. It happens when a tooth begins to feel painful. Nerves in your tooth are sending messages to your tiny brain which is in turn telling you you have pain in your tooth. During the tooth ache you should hit your thumb with a big hammer this will send another message to your brain telling you that you have more pain in your thumb. Your tiny brain will then over ride the tooth ache signal and it will concentrate on the thumb ache instead. Thus you will forget about your tooth ache. How cool is that.

My father used to tell me to rub Gin on my gum when I was a kid with a toothache.
I know you're thinking alcohol and kids don't mix, but it was only a wet finger's worth and it really helped num the gum. And my father is a tenured professor not like a drunken bad dad or something.
