That's because when the hair splits on the end, it tends to form the shape of a "Y". The more it splits, those ends begin to pull away as if you were peeling a banana. Those free ends or splits just take up space by pointing every which way. Now, when you cut them off or use products to smooth them out, you are left with an "I" shape which doesn't take up much space, which means your hair is staighter. I hope this helps!

When the ends of your hairs split, it causes extra weight because instead of one piece, you have two. Also, if your hair is split, it means your hair has been weakened or damaged by something - usually a dye or some other treatment. I've paid much more attention to hair care over the past year, and I no longer get split ends. I prevented this by investing in good hair cuts, I stopped coloring my hair (or if I do, I invest in a well-known colorist who uses gentle chemicals) and I use good product.

That's why when you go to a salon, they'll want to cut off your split ends because the extra weight is not good for any style.

The condition known as split ends, technically known as trichoptilosis, occurs when the hair has been stressed too much and the stress frays the ends of the hairstrand. Common causes of trichoptilosis include damage from heat styling, bleaching, coloring, and use of inferior haircare products. Although some products claim to repair split ends, this just isn't true. The only way to get rid of split ends is to cut them off.
