My roosters crow to make sure everyone knows they are alive. They do this at all hours of the day and night, particularly around 3 or 4 am when I'm sound asleep and not in the mood to wake up to a bunch of roosters seeing who is the loudest. If one crows, every one within hearing distance will crow. It doesn't seem to be done to attract a hen, as mine never do it when the girls are around. Instead they start acting like they found something to eat, and when the poor hen runs over to get a bite, they pounce on her. When they fight, they never crow. It's only when they're standing around doing nothing that they puff up and let loose.
