No, not really all that much... never gave it a second thought. What about Mexican restaurants speaking in Spanish?

I think that we (those of us born speaking english as a first language) forget exactly HOW difficult English is to learn as a second language. I think that it is a good idea for everyone in the US to know and speak English, but I can understand why someone from a different nation background might opt for their "native" tongue...... Just a thought

It does makes you wonder what they're saying sometimes...

But it also means that your food is actually being cooked by Chinese people... So I guess it cuts both ways.
(which doesn't mean it's authentic, necessarily, any more than it would if they spoke Spanish at a Taco Bell. You have to go to either a nicer restaurant, one that specializes in authentic food, or do some travelling to get real Chinese food. :)

As for why they can't speak English, they probably can, but as jehrapha said, perhaps they're more comfortable in their native language, especially when talking about food.

What you are saying is so true. They probably don't want you to know what they are talking about because it may be personal. Or they may be talking about you and saying spit in his food. Chinese is a very hard language to learn and so is English. I usually have a very hard time understanding their English. They probably are more comfortable speaking their own language.

as long as they get the order right, don't sweat it. unless you are acting like a jerk they aren't talking about you. probably talking about how their wife/husband's mother gets on their nerves... just like regular people.
