With that much money, you could do quite a bit of traveling in Europe. Europe is full of hostels, which are incredibly cheap to stay in if you aren't picky and want to meet other international travelers like yourself. Europe is generally safer as well.
If you are an American, you should look into buying a Euro Pass for the international trains. You can buy passes very affordably which allow you to travel between countries in Europe on your whims. However, the Euro Pass is much cheaper if you buy it while you are still in the States; some forms of it can't even be purchased once you are actually in Europe.
If you want to stay in one place for an extended period, look on www.vrbo.com for a few nice vacation rentals that charge by the week or month. VRBO rentals are sold by their owners, so they are cheaper than places a travel agent would show you. You can find small properties in South America, Spain, Italy, etc. for prices you can easily afford given your budget. You can find cute little apartments all over for less than $500 a week. String together eight of these, travel with your Euro-Pass and travel for over two months while getting a significant taste of each place! Having an apartment with a kitchen can seriously eliminate food costs, as well! Maybe start in Paris for a week, sweep down to Madrid, over to Rome, up to Budapest and Berlin, and leave from Amsterdam! If you like the nightlife make sure to stop in Prague. Mountains? Stop in Geneva. Architecture or boats? Copenhagen or Turkey. Ocean Views and Ruins? Greece. You might be able to stay in a hostel in secondary cities you are interested in for a night or two between primary cities. Check out St. Petersburg, Russia, too, if you can.
Good Luck!

Get a Eurail pass, gets you to most of Europe for the cost of the ticket! Don't know how old you are, but hostels are available in almost every major city you'll land in. If you don't want to do this, there is usually an accomodations kiosk where you can get hotel reservations depending on your budget.
The Eastern European countries are generally cheaper, but in any city, if you do a lot of walking or get a local metro pass, get food at local stands or in local supermarkets (fun and economical), get a one-price attraction pass, you can really make your money go far.
Some parts of Asia are also relatively inexpensive. They probably have inter-Asia rail and air passes too . Canada can also be a good option. The dollar doesn't go as far as it used to, but there are still good deals to be had.
And don't forget the good old US- there's an amazing amount to see!

Thailand is the cheapest and really beautiful. Once you get a plane ticket, you can get a nice 4 star hotel for really cheap (something like 20 bucks a day). Talk to a travel agent, if you have a certain place in mind and let them know what your budget is and what you are interested in getting out of the trip (enlightenment, relaxation, adventure, etc).
Also look into Phillippines and India.

You have sufficient budget to explore some of the best European destinations, but if you are visiting in 2014 than i would recommend you should opt Brazil because of 2014 world cup and also it is very beautiful place for travel. There are many destinations to visit like Rio de Janeiro, Iguazu Falls etc.
