God gave man the freedom of choice. You can choose to reject sin, or to accept it.

Eating from the tree is symbolisim. It symbolizes mans morality. We have hardship, sin and temptation in order to have something to compare heaven to. If we were just put in heaven we wouldn't appreciate it. Do those who work for their money appreciate it more than those who are just given money? So these things are for our own benefit. Does a little kid understand why they have to eat yucky green vegetables? No but it's good for them even if they don't understand it.

It's the age-old question: destiny vs free-will. God gave Adam and Eve the choice to eat the fruit or not. He didn't make them and he didn't stop them. In this way 'mankind' let evil into the world.

The wages of sin (disobeying laws of life) is death (ceaseing to exist). The gift of God is eternal life. It's all part of the plan of Love.
