You can get realistic from both oil and acryllic, it is all about shading, highlights and little details.

the biggest difference, as many people have already said though is that acryllic is a much faster drying medium. Oils take about 6 months to fully cure, so you can paint something, come back a week later and the paint is still wet. If you are looking to paint with more overlapping colours and more of a drybrush technique, than I reccommend acryllic paints. Oils on the other hand can give a very translucent look that is also desirable in landscapes.

The other thing you should look at is how the paint cleans up. Acryllics are nice because you can thin the paint with water and cleanup only requires water. Oils need to be cleaned with mineral spirits or turpentine.

It depends on how skilled you are. Oil is more permanent and if you make a mistake, you're kind of stuck with it. But acrylic turns to almost a plastic once it's on the canvas, so if you make a mistake or change your mind, you can just wait for it to dry and paint right over it. Oil may look a little more realistic, but acrylic could look really good too. Just be sure to paint the canvas with Jesso and let it dry before you begin painting. It'll fill in the cracks in the canvas and keep the painting from looking choppy, for a more professional look.

Acrylic is much easier to work with...oils richer and more subtle. Either way, the "realistic" comes from the person using the brush, not what paint is on the brush.
Personally, I'd choose oil.

Oil is easier to play with. Once you put acrylics on a paitning they are there, yo udon't have as much time to blend and fool around. Personally I love acrylic. It is dramatic, fast drying, and easy to layer. But I also like oils because they are so versatile. It's up to you. If you are experienced with acrylics, you will be fine, otherwise use oil! Hope this helps.

I've always found acryllic easier to work with. There's actually something in between that you might want to look into called "water based oils". Which is really acrylics that are pretending to be oils.

If you are painting plein air landscapes, I would go with the acrylics. Less chance of messing it up when you're packing it up.

The realism comes from the artist, not the medium.

Oils bring any painting to life. Oils have translucence to them, so it gives the appearance of depth when painting.

They take forever to dry though.

Acrylics can also offer some realism, and is easier to manipulate than oils.

Basically it is your own preference. I like acrylic because it dries fast and it is easy to work with. Oil is messy and somewhat difficult to work with. But that is just an opinion.
