I've heard if you have your eyeliner tatooed on, that if you need an x-ray that the doctors cannot x-ray you because it will burn your eyes and possibly blind you. Is this true. Something in the tattoo material that will react against the x-ray and burn your eyes.

Yes, their is some truth to that. It's the metal is ink that they are worried about with a MRI, but the risk is small. I think you can get non-ferrous ink pernament eyeliner. I know that when I worked in a steel foundry, I had to get my eyes x-rayed first for metal dust, before going into the MRI machine. I've heard that some people can't get epidermal needles into their spine, because of tattoos on the back. Sometimes, they even cut the tattoo out so they don't inject the ink into your spinal fluid.

Hi Cheryl, I have never heard of this but I know many people who have lots of tattoos and had x rays but never burned. My friend had her eyeliner tattooed on because she is lazy and can never get up early enough to put any make up on and I don't think she has ever had a problem. I would check with the tattooist because if it is true, then they should never be allowed to do it, just in case the person needs an x ray in the future!
In any case, it does sound like a painful think to do so I have never given it a thought! Always stuck to decent eyeliners that stay put, but good luck to you!

I have two very close friends, who have permanent eyeliner. One of them also has permanent lipstick. They both look wonderful, all the time. One of them recently had a baby. I know she felt exhausted and was in pain (emergency c-section), but she looked great! A lady visitor in the hospital commented on how could she think of putting on make-up. She didn't. It is just on forever. It does fade a little after 5 or 6 years. One of these friends is a highly respected nurse. She has never mentioned the x-ray danger. I know she would have if it existed. Oh, eyes and lips are about $300 dollars.

No, that's not true about x-rays. The only thing I can think of is that it might be possible that you couldn't have an MRI if there is something metallic in the ink.
