As mentioned, there are many alternatives to sulfonamides. Which one would be appropriate depends on many factors: patient age, kidney/liver function, type of infection (actual organism), site of infection, severity of infection, etc.

Most commonly today, drugs from the fluoroquinolone family are used. Cipro (ciprofloxacin) & Levaquin (levofloxacin) are the two most common. This is of course, all hypothetical based again on the above variables that need to be considered before a specific drug is prescribed.

Introduced in the 1980s, this class antibiotics is becoming increasingly popular with each passing year primarily due to the increase in antibiotic-resistant infections. Used most commonly to treat pneumonia and bronchitis, nowadays doctors are using them to treat just about everything. In fact at my pharmacy, they're quickly creeping up the list of most popular antibiotics dispensed, right behind amoxicillin, azithromycin, and bactrim ds.

I guss you take bactrim for UTI.If you are allergic to sulfa drug then avoid it.There so many other drugs are indicate for uti;such as antibiotic;levaquin,augmentin,.But the best way to pick of anti biotic is base on the culture and sensitivities test.

normally the alternative would be in the penicillin family ,cephalosporin family, anything in the family of azithromycin.
