It is a defensive instinctive move that they are born with.

Well i guess that depends on the kitten. My friend has a cat that i don't think i ever heard her hiss, than my grandfather has a cat that hissed when he was just 8 weeks old. They will hiss when they are ready Lets face it it's a cat and cats are very in depended about every thing they do!! lol Good luck with the hissing

Did anyone ever teach you to scream when in trouble or a dog to growl? Hissing is pretty much the same thing for cats. Natural response to fear.

I have seen kittens a few days old hiss or blow. It's so cute, their eyes weren't even open. It's just a natural defense thing they are born with.

Normally, kittens learn how to hiss when they start to recognize the dangers around them. When they are young, they're to wild to notice anything at all. I think that they have to expirience something frightening to get them to learn to protect themselves.

Thanks for altering people to this danger. Here in Cyprus there are a lot of stray and feral cats, and this summer alone on 3 occasions I've rescued kittens when I heard crying coming from parked cars. People can also beep their car horn or check under their bonnet before starting their engine.

I think it is instinctual. Haven't you ever seen a little kitten hiss and spit when they like a dog? It's actually really cute.
