There aren't any red lines going up my finger, and it's just swollen on one side to the point where it can't swell anymore. It's very red, and I know it became infected from biting my nails. Any suggestions on what to do?

Your just gonna have to ride it out until it's ready to be expelled. Try the old fashioned hot compress (it does work). Until you get the infection out, it's gonna hurt like you know what. Shouldn't be much longer.

don't call 911, don't amputate or use alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. all sound bad. Do clean hand. use a good antibacterial soap but beta-dine is better. You have perinichea, on the affected finger take a tablespoon of household liquid bleach add to a quart of water. pour some to a shallow glass and soak for about five minutes twice a day. In two to three days you wont have any more problems. If you see that the infection is moving up the hand then see a doctor as soon as possible. Calling 911 is a waste of money, the alcohol hurts with little gain, the hydrogen peroxide kills tissue and very few germs the ointments can be placed on after the bleach soaks but don't kill or stop methicillin resistant staph or strep. The bleach however may sting for a second or two but is excellent at killing bacteria costs very little and actually goes deeper int to the tissue to get at bacteria than the topical antibiotics. The antibiotic ointments can then be apply to prevent other bacteria from colonizing the tissue. I thought the condom answer was hilarious though. How about you?

If it's right next to the side of your nail, see if you can determine where there might be a "head" that would have the white liquid in it. Sometimes its the part that is the least sore. Take a sterilized needle, and gently push it into this place and squeeze to let the infection out. This will also allow an antibiotic ointment like Neosporin to penetrate, so apply that after. If you are sqeemish and don't want to try to puncture, apply the ointment and put a bandaid on. This has always helped me in the past - I don't bite my nails, but occasionally a piece will pull off from the side of one and get infected.

I know this is what everyone is going to say, but go to a doctor! You may need a tetanus shot or antibiotics or something like that. In the meantime, and I'm not a doctor!, I'd probably soak my finger in warm water for a while, apply neosporin, and bandage that bad boy.

You need to stop biting your nails! It's a hard habit to break, but you need to do it!

your best bet would be go to the doctor . the pressure from the infection mostly needs to be relieved preferably by a doctor, however this happens to my husband (from biting his nails) and we usually take a needle and puncture the skin to allow the pus to drain.

If those red Lines get any bigger you could DIE

Go to the hospital, the same thing happened to someone I know they give you a couple of shots then they send you home

But trust me got to the DOCTOR

The streak you have... could go to your heart and kill you
