I like the previous answers my personal assault rifle is select fire semi-full auto. The FN FAL it's from the same era as the AK-47 but uses the .308 Win round you at the moment can find 5,10, 20 and if you look really hard you can find a 30 round mag. The reason that I like this gun is at the front of the gas cylinder is a gas valve I can adjust the valve to cycle the rounds better for different rounds eliminating jams all together. With the heavy barrel that I installed I can reach 900yds with a 1.765" group. They also make a very stable scope mount for the gun.

Actually there is a list of criteria, any 3 of which constitute an assault rifle. If you put a folding stock, muzzle break and a 30 round clip on a .22 you have an assault rifle in the eyes of the government.
Best at what?
AK is a great lead slinger, cheap ammo, reliable and fun to shoot. Personally I would consider Russian the rich mans AK, from there down to Romanian, but they are all pretty good.
SKS is more accurate, but less capacity in it's stock form.
AR15 is a step up, higher maintenance, but great accuracy at medium ranges and still reasonable ammo cost.
FAL is my personal favorite. Costs a bit to shoot, but put a good 10X scope on it and you can hold 5" groups past 500 yards.
There are tons of others, it just depends on what you want.

I have a Russian SKS, unmodified with the standard 10 round box internal magazine and the folding bayonet. It is not considered an assault rifle, even though one of my favorite weapons.
I like the AK-47, reliable, cheap ammo, and quite powerful at ranges less than 300 yards (who needs more). Shot a few hundred rounds out of it at a range and it was very good.
An AR-15 is also a good rifle, with light recoil, high velocity, and good accuracy. The power of it is quite limited.
I really want to try one of those Chinese QBZ-95s in 5.8 x 42mm

SKS is not an assault rifle by definition, since it is not selective fire capable.
As far as the best goes a .7.62x51mm rifle is the best, either the G3 and its variants of the FN FAL. You cannot go wrong with a weapon made by FN or H&K. But these are technically "battle rifles" not "assault rifles" as they fire full-sized rifle cartridges.
In 5.56 I would give it to the HK416 for regular layout and overall the FAMAS or FN2000 bullpups for best all around 5.56mm
Nothing in 7.62x39mm would be on my list, AK style rifles are reliable as hell, but inaccuarate and have relatively short effective range

how about an AK-47 7.62x39 never jams cheap ammo 500 rds for 68 bucks or so and my favorite because it can withstand sand water mud rust and i think it is the best looking rifle out there.and only cost about 300-600 some are cheap like 329 in jgsales.com.or atlanticfirearms.com

By definition, an "assault rifle" is capable of selective fire, which means it can fire FULL AUTO or semi auto.
You SKS is by no means an assault rifle. It's actually properly referred to as a "Semi-auto Carbine".
I like the AK. It's not particular to any environmental conditions, although it sucks for long range work. Better still is the Czech VZ. 58. It's the rich man's AK.

If your are talking about a weapon that is used to kill people not game then 9you did put this under hunting) then the AK-47 reliable and is easy to get and produce, if your talking about a hunting rifle then a rifle that models the 98K Mauser is the best.

If you consider semi-autos eligible to be called assault rifles, you might want to consider CZ's vz52 or the well-thought-out but never issued EM2. Both the 7.62x45 and the 7mm British rounds were sensible cartridges.
