While I agree that communication and trust and honesty are all very important, they are not the most important. What is, is not trying to control the other partner. If you ever tried to control someone, you know that you can't.
No one wants to be told what to do, where to go, who they can talk to, what time to be home, etc.
You can ask someone to do something, but if they don't, you can't make them. And if you try to, it will become a power struggle. Let someone be who they are, as annoying as that is sometimes. Learn to love the person unconditionally. That is key.

Communication, even if you love each other deeply, there is gotta be a connection, a unique way between the two of you to communicate and understand each other.
