I tend to stay away from religious leaders. I've had experiences much worse than them asking for money.

Yes, one of my friends tithed at least 15%, and he was at church every time the doors were open. That wasn't enough. The pastor kept hounding people for more money. It never ended. They had some sort of a special campaign going on and more money was needed for the project, but my friend (and others) ended up leaving the church because they were being exploited. And when they questioned the motives, they were criticized as being tools of the devil. And this was in an evangelical church !!

I have had bad experiences in general with church asking for money and telling me how much of my income I should be giving to them. Why is god so poor? Does god see any of this money or does it all go to the people who count the money and checks in the little envelopes????

Is this a trick question? I thought all pastors ask for donations during or after a sermon, and plates are passed round. If that is not asking for money, what is?

Yes, and if I told you what famous televangelist church we went to that would say it all. We got tired of it and left. We were told we didn't love God, etc. if we didn't give. We tithed 20% at times, saved people from loosing their homes, gave to homeless, building fund, debt payoff, etc... As we gave, God blessed but the more money we made the more they wanted to take.... It became like the government. We were blessed because we (husband and I at our respective jobs) worked, worked and worked some more and got promoted. Once we figured out we were padding someone's pocket and helping people who wouldn't go to work, we left that church (at the direction of God). Never again will we tithe or give out of fear but only as God leads.

Yes, I once went to a church where the preacher would hold us and announce "Nobody's leaving until we get $30 more dollars!" Did I mention that she never actually preached but read a couple of scriptures and then everybody "danced" to the "praise" music?

THEY all ask for money - to save someone or something, to get a new roof, to help the poor, the dead or the dying, to publish leaflets, to spread the word. But are they worse than televangalists? now THEY are always asking for money.
