Get good crops, higher fertility in their women, win a battle, protect themselves from monsters like the FSM. Doubt it was too effective tho.

In China, some girls are aborted or killed in order to gain a son, where limits are placed on the number of children a family might have.
Some cultures practiced sacrifice, but it usually wasn't thier own, and in truly ancient civilisations, girls were honored more than men.
