I'm an atheist, and I'm not technically IN the Religion & Spirituality section. I'm in all answers, and sometimes questions from here catch my eye. Especially if they're addressed to atheists specifically.

Disbelief in a god does not necessarily exclude belief in spirituality...

Buddhists and Taoists are essentially Atheist religions as they don't worship any silly concept of a personal god. And several Atheists associate with those philosophies. Other atheists I know believe in some spirituality, such as ghosts, unexplainable energies, etc. or are at least willing to accept the possibility. The idea of a god may be farcical and is supported by absolutely zero evidence (indeed reality itself contradicts the bible) but that doesn't prohibit the chance that there is something else.

And there are also atheists (which I lean more towards) simply realize the staggering amount of harm that stems from religious ignorance and seek to challenge it - those of us who realize that the most prominent root of evil lies in the belief of an old fairytale, and an unpleasant, cruel, petty, jealous, vindicative, murderous, genocidal, and all around malevolent bastard of a god.

Because I don't give a damn about science, that's why. :)

(Okay, I take that back--I like science, but it's nothing I enjoy talking about on a daily basis. Religion, on the other hand, makes for fun conversations)

I'm a "spiritual atheist", I suppose. I don't believe in a higher power, but I believe in love, harmony, karma, etc.

I'm not an Atheist. I'm Agnostic. However everybody has the right to be on this section as everybody has something to say when it comes to the subject of religion. This forum is about learning different things and religions. Everybody has the right to share their knowledge with one another. This site isn't meant for people trying to convert or even deconvert people to and from religion.

We already know enough about science. That's why we're atheists!
We feel obligated to free you from your mind-numbing belief that you have an afterlife. Maybe YOU should spend some time in the SCIENCE section?

We do spend most of our time in worthwhile pursuits. Sometimes it's just fun to shoot some fish in a barrell is all.

One of many problems believers have is their fear of questions, even the most benign of which is perceived as an attack. It doesn't reflect well on religion to be so paranoid all the time; it gives the impression that you can't stand up to even cursory inspection. Hmm.

Excellent question for atheists to answer. Two reasons: they are not absolutely sure of their convictions and hope somehow someone will reach them with a convincing argument; or more likely, they want to win converts among religious people. Isnt that what being an atheist is afterall--another religion--albeit with a human god

To side step all of the religious crap and actually answer this smarta$$ question, a lot of people just look at all unanswered questions rather than going to a specific section. I think a better question would be why are many religious folks so smug??

Because christians always post questions calling us out. If I was to go on the science section and say god doesn't exist, I bet I would get many responses from ya'll.

If Yahoo! gives a list of "similar questions" when a person types one in, why doesn't anyone read it? Just want to know. If I were asking a question that's been asked 18.5 million times before I'd read what other people had to say first.
