If your dog is itchy and red, it probably is a food allergy. You can go to the vets and have blood tests done to find out what the allergy is, but that's expensive. The easiest and cheapest way is to modify their diet. There are many foods out there for dogs that are specifically for allergies. You need to try one with either rice & egg, rice & salmon, rice & venison or rice & lamb. The reason is that these protein sources are rarely found in normal dog food so your dog won't have been exposed to it before and shouldn't have developed any allergy to it. It takes 6-8 weeks to see results from this diet change, so be patient. Also you must be sure that they don't get ANY other food while you are doing this trial period: don't let them get into other pet foods or even give them doggie treats (unless it's ones made from the ingredients I listed, check out a PetSmart store, they have these products). I've been going through this with my Pug, good luck!

My dog is being treated at the moment for a skin problem, an allergy to something. My vet tells me that very very few dogs actually have a true food allergy, usually something else is the cause. Having said that it may well be that your dog does have one. Try something like Royal Canin sensible or Eukanuba Lamb and Rice. Your local pet shop or vet should be able to recommend something.

Stay away from Kibbles and Chunks or Bits! A dog groomer told me that it is loaded with sugar/sugar products and that is a major cause of itching/dry skin for a dog. Go for something with natural ingredients and REAL meat/vegies.

Wheat, corn, soy, beef, chicken, and certain dairy products. Your vet can provide you with or recommend brands of food that would be best for your pet.

yes, change your food to a lamb and rice combination...you don't have to spend a lot , look at the ingredients..the first listed is the highest content, so don't buy any that state main ingredient as yeast, or flour, or any unknown garbage
