The purpose of the ten commandments is very simple. God wants us to live by his rules. The ten commandments simply let us know what the rules are. Oh and if only we would, what a wonderful world it could be, isn't it crazy, 10 rules , that's all 10 and if those were the only 10 rules we followed in life this world would be a whole different place.

The Ten Commandments is based on the Natural Law. Society wants its citizens to get along and have personal freedoms. The Ten Commandments gives that freedom to people. When people have guide lines that all go by, there is the freedom to live without the fear of your possessions being taken from you.

The ten commandments are the ten injunctions given by god to
moses on mount sinai, serving as the basis of mosaic law.

I think the purpose for creating the ten commandments where that god saw that the people of egypt where sinful and where losing faith in god when the lord saw this he orderd moses to climb mount sinai and retreive the ten commancments. the ten commandments helped moses have some kind of order. God also gave the people the ten commandments so that they would be faithful and would'nt have to be sent to hell where they would be burned in a lake of fire for all eternity

The purpose of the ten commandments, which are actually a part of the Jewish Laws of Moses, are basically a guide to being a good person. Don't break the law, love your family, love your God.

It is God's law- in the OT, the people were to live by the Laws and obey them....and when they sinned they would have to offer a blood sacrifice of an animal EVERYTIME they sinned---God had a plan since the beginning to bring salvation to men, and it is through Jesus, who would cover the sins of those who believe, and they would be under His grace, not the law---however the Law is still needed because it has always shown people they have sinned against God, it is a schoolmaster. People cannot be aware of sin, until they can see according to God's law they have broken at least one- and they will have to face Him on judgment day. This goes to the conscious of the person, when they hear the gospel, they better understand it because they see they have sinned against God as Romans 3:23 says--and we use the Law to show them, we have all sinned against God.
Romans 3:20
Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.

I find it silly that the first four commandments have nothing whatsoever to do with morality in general yet the ten commandments are posted outside court houses. Haven't they ever heard of seperation of church and state?

Hey, Paladin...
Jesus said something similar when Jewish leaders of the day asked which of the commandments was most important. His answer: Love God. Love your neighbor. That pretty much sums it up. FYI...Breaking the 6th commandment "Children, obey your parents" is a sign that the world is headed down the toilet.

"People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, without self-control, brutal..." 2 Timothy 3:2-3

Wow. That rings a little too close to home.

It was a way to protect property.

Don't steal from your neighbor, don't covet his wife or ox. Basically don't take anything from anyone who has more than you because God says so.

It is how the powerful maintain their power.

Here's a good commandment: If you have an ox and your neighbor doesn't use yours to help him plow his land.
