have a kitten and another cat about a year old--I also have a 9mo old baby at home and my cats are wild ALL NIGHT! They just run through the house constantly and its gotten to the point where they've woken up my son a few times this week--what can I do to make them calm down; I've tried using a spray bottle w. water and also tried the newspaper noise (that might work for dogs only, I wasnt sure)

Help!!

Unfortunatly spraying your young cats will not help, as they wont understand what they are doing wrong.

Cats as young as yours are very hyper and it is normal and unfortunatly that is what comes from having kittens. You can try wearing them out in the day by playing with them lots. That's about all you can do.

CATNIP
I don't know if this will help you but it helped me with one of my kitties . I have a kitten that when we got him all he wanted to do was run around the house and bounce off the walls and i have a two year old son . I tried to spray bottle but that didn't work so i gave up for a little bit. well one day my friend came over and she had bought some catnip( her kitty didn't like it ) so we gave some to my kitty , he was more wired than i had ever seen him for about 2 or 3 hours , then he calmed down and just lay-ed there being lazy until the next morning . so try giving you're kitties a little catnip and let them tire themselves out so you and your baby can sleep. keep in mind though a little catnip goes a long way, you'll need to test and see just how much catnip it take to get all that energy out of you're kitties if it works.

Like everyone says, this is normal behavior for kittens. Heck, my 5 year old cats will run around like crazy. Play with them during the day to help wear them out is one of the best things to do. You can separate them, but they may scratch the door or meow at night. You could keep them together in a separate room or space that is away from you and the baby. Try feeding them some canned food before bed-it may make them sleepy. Water won't work real well if they are wound up. You have to understand, they have nothing to do to the day, so they probably sleep. Cats are noctural, so they like to sleep in the day. Try to keep them entertained. I feed the birds so the cats have something to watch during the day. You could also try the videos with birds or fish to help entertain them. Good luck!

The problem is that cats are nocturnal, they are genetically wired to be the most active at night. The two cats you have are very young too, so they have plenty of energy. I assure you they will grow out of it before you know it and you might find you miss your energetic kitties, but for now you have a dilema with them waking your son. Can you put them in a separate room and close the door during the night time? Can you shut the door to your baby's room? If they are going to play "chase" all night, then you'll have to limit where they are allowed to run. Hope that helps!

cats are actually nocturnal creatures so their antics and play usually rev up as you and your family are winding down.
this is perfectly normal and typical. Try keeping them in one room at night with a cat tree and toys and food and water.
I am constantly awoken at night by kitties running over my head or pouncing on my stomach. I find it amusing and just roll over and go back to sleep. However, waking up a baby can be a pain for the parents so my only suggestion is keep the nursery door shut and use a baby monitor or keep the cats shut in another room at night so they can play without waking you. I alway find it best not to allow kitties unsupervised near a sleeping baby as where the old wives tale about a cat stealing a baby's breath is false cats do like to sleep and snuggle up to a warm body and may end up laying on a tiny infants chest which can restrict breathing or laying over the head of a baby that is too young to move away causing unintentional suffocation. Best to keep kitties away from baby at night anyway.

Both of your cats are young enough that they are both really kittens. The behavior you describe, especially with two cats in the house, is actually quite typical. The only suggestion I can make is shutting them into two SEPARATE rooms and away from your baby.

Everyone's advise is good, the only thing i can think of is put them in a room(as far away from the babies room as possible) big enough for them to play with food water and litter box and Lott's of toys, things they like and maby they will ware themselves out and not disturb the baby.

I think that you should try to wear them out in the day. You should also put their food and litterboxes in different rooms and put them each in his/her own room at night. This will probably cease anyway as they get older. They are both young enough to count as kittens, who have a ton of energy which they seem to be letting out at night.

lock them in a single room at night, wont hurt them at all.
I'd feed them there dinner in the room and shut the door and walk awayt. They meowed a bit at first but its better than having them run loose and trying to crawl under my door( only paws could be seen) or sit and meow for us to come out.
