There are A LOT of great colleges in the NY, and surrounding Areas. A LOT. It really depends on what it is that you want to study.
The cost of living in NYC is the most expensive in the country... sales tax is the highest in the country and minimum wage i believe is something like $7 something... which is okay. Even areas surrounding the city living is expensive. I commute into Manhattan everyday from about 15 miles away...
You will notice price increases in a variety of different ways. I pay a thousand dollars a month for a one bedroom apartment that in upstate NY (lets say Syracuse, or Albany) i could pay probably 400.
Don't get me wrong- living a life here is amazing and it is worth all the crazy little ways that you have to pay. My suggestion is look at SUNY or CUNY (state/city universities of New York) They are the least expensive tuition wise, and usually offer on campus housing, this will help with funds. Once you find one that you feel would be great for you schedule a tour and ask on campus the cost of living for most students.
Good luck, you will be happy in new york if you love a fast paced place with lots of people to meet!

Good questions. NYC's minimum wage is the same as the country I believe but most jobs pay at least $7. that I know of (including hostessing, clerical, etc). I'd expect to get paid at least that. Waiting jobs you can make way more than that though and temp jobs as well may be more around $10. Expect to pay at least $650-$700 a month in rent if you plan on living in one of the boroughs other than Manhattan (Manhattan is MUCH more expensive) and $40 in utilities. It's do-able if you really want to be here.

I moved to NY for college myself and found it really wonderful. I'm still here and I love it. If you are a city person or think you might be and there is a college in the city that has a program you like I'd go for it.

What kinds of programs are you looking for? I attended Marymount Manhattan College for acting and loved it. I highly recommend that program if that's what you are looking for. I'd really look into colleges that have the program(s) that you want because that's going to be the most helpful. If you really want to be in the city I'd look at NYU. Columbia is great if you have the grades.

good luck with the search!
