I'm so frustrated right now. I've been seeing a doctor for over 3 years now for depression and a month ago he put me on Xanax for anxiety and I started seeing a psychiatrist as well. He put me on a low dosage of the Xanax (.5 mg)and I asked my psychiatrist if it was ok to take 2 milligrams a day instead of 1 a day because I'd been taking the for almost a week and it wasn't helping. She said it was fine so that's what I did. I ran out 2 weeks later and went to get them refilled and they called my doctor and now the doctor is freaking out at me like I was abusing them or something! They really were helping me and now I'm afraid he's not going to give them to me anymore and my psych. can't prescribe meds.... I know these are "highly-addictive" meds but I've been on and off of this medicine for about 5 years now and it's never bothered me... What do I do??

Something is wrong in this scenario. Psychiatrists can and do prescribe medications, perhaps you're seeing a psychologist so you must clarify this with your therapist. If she tells you that she cannot prescribe medication, something is amiss. Your therapist may not want to override your physicians medical authority, but you need clarification from both doctors. Have your therapist contact the doctor. I can't imagine that he would just cut the medication off so take care of this before their offices close. Feel better, they're not going to just leave you flat without help.

Get your psychiatrist to talk to your doctor.

On a side note: I've struggled with depression my whole life and been on and off a lot of medication and can honestly say you should start working on not taking medication at all. There are tons of studies showing that medication exaccerbates the problem, and I can attest to that from personal experience. I was at my very worst while on medication (in the hospital with bandages on my wrists) and stopped taking them shortly after the incedent, saw a therapist once a week, and I feel very fine now.

Few years back I was gravely depressed over an injury I had sustained. It came to a point where I thought I might just rid myself of the injuried limb and I would be better.

I found a massage therapiest that worked on emotional blockage in my body and found that if I "released" that emotional blockage that it would help. It did. Within just a few months I was a thousand times better, and now years later I am a whole lot better.

Google> emotional > blockage > massage

And see what comes up- oh, and dump the drugs, they just make you dependent on something that isn't really helping you, its just painting over the real problem.

depression medications take time to become effective. and some of them are not effective for some situations.

i think there are one of two things you should do:
a) take the prescribed dose for a longer time to see if it does eventually kick in
b) talk to your doctor about changing the dose/medication

medications aren't something you should be messing around with. and although your psychiatrist may know lots about anti-depressants, she has not had formal training in prescription and the medical aspect of them like your doctor has. that being said, you should listen to your doctor or talk to him about your situation and changing your perscription.

You are becoming too dependent on these drugs. The solution is not in the cure but in the cause....What causes your depression? A bad relationship?
Then build new selfbuilding relationships
Is depression a permanent state?....Only if you don't find and deal with the cause.....Certainly it wasn't a lack of medicine so what is it?

Have your Psychiatrist call your doctor to let them know what she has suggested.

my advice is do not claim anything. Stop taking those pills, they only make the matter worse. Try praying. God is the only real good physician. My prays are with you.
