A lot of times I hear us refer to ourselves using labels: Christian, theist, atheist, Muslim.

I have also heard others use those same labels and other's on us: unbeliever, religionist, Bible-worshipper.

Did Adam create these labels when he was labeling the beasts?

"...and I'll call this beast heathen..."

Do we create these labels to show that we are different than others or to show that others are different from us?

Do labels help create and reinforce stereotypes?

I don't label myself-- I'm not a jar. And I recognize others as humans and not jars, so I don't label them.
And I believe labels to be stereotypes. Christian, Muslim, Jew, Hindu, those aren't labels, but classifications. One wouldn't call oneself a Muslim unless they believed and one wouldn't call another a Muslim if the person in question did not practice the religion.

I don't label myself as anything. I guess if I had to I'd say I was Pagan. I believe religion is something made for very weak, feeble people, who can not think for themselves so they need a higher being to speak to and trust. Labels do create stereotypes. But mostly it's the people labelling that stereotype. Just because I'm a Pagan, does not mean I worship the devil- which many people think. I lean towards the wiccan side of paganism which is a nature-based religion. I have practiced witchcraft before, though. In my eyes, witchcraft(or spells) is practically the same as praying and worshipping a cross that reoresents "god."

I label myself by my actions, but others label me based upon their perception of me.

Labels are good because they help us avoid unnecessary or unwanted conflicts.

Labels are bad because they often times limit our contact with others who do not share a similar label.

I label myself as a person without a label.

Paradox?

In Islam "Allah taught Adam all the names"

No one is quite sure what that means, so yeah! maybe.
