I have 2 really nice watches, that I dont wear often. Maybe once a year if that. Do I need to take the batteries out when not in use?

No you don't have to, to save the battery life pull out the stem of the watch and it will stop time and save your battery.

If you're talking COACH, GUCCI, etc.. but other than that...I don't think a special watch battery is required so it's not that huge of a hassle to have it replaced. Generally, you will find that the higher quality the watch, the longer the battery lasts. I bought many watches varying from Walmart & Target, to Kenneth Cole & GUCCI and having my GUCCI watch and my husbands Kenneth Cole watch between us within the last 4 years, the batteries are still going strong. I wouldn't even worry about that stuff. Even if it's a Target or Walmart watch, you can take it to a jeweler and have them throw a new watch battery in there for less than $10
