I think you should talk to him about what he feels is "mucky" and what you feel is too. I know couples who have full on out intercourse during that time of the month. It's normal and for some very satisfying. If it is not something you are comfortable with you could do what is referred to as "petting"! or pleasure him in other ways. He can finger your cl**oris without either of you getting "mucky", and you can do oral on him to satisfy him.
