Absolutely not. All you really need is some common sense. It's not that difficult to figure out how to do the right thing. Some of the most moral people I know have no religion, and don't believe in God.

What is "morality"? How can one define it without some baseline? And it's fine and good to say "The Golden Rule", but that is only the "gold standard" because of the influence religion has had upon society throughout history. But the fact of the matter is, the baseline against which "morality" is measured IS religion.

Ooooh....I'm sure I'll get a lot of thumbs down for that answer... lol

Of course not. Its like priests have never done something wrong. Religious leaders are often times the worst people in the world. Starting wars over religion. In fact basing your morality on religion is quite a dangerous thing. If religion tells you something is wrong how can you make an objective conclusion if you are a devout follower?

No, religion is not necessary. We have an instinct to work together as a people. If anything religion hinders morality.

Religion isn't necessary, but a belief in God is. God defined morality by making laws to be kept. Mankind has based most of their laws and values on God's law. Without God, there would be no morality.

No. Atheists are significantly under-represented in crime statistics and prison populations. If religion was the source of morality, we wouldn't have a Ted Haggard running around, would we?

Not one bit. One can have higher morals than a religious person. Just because one doesn't believe in G-d doesn't mean they can't have morals.

Definitely not. Being a good person is more like common sense, because that's the only way to go if you think about it. Religion has nothing to do with it, atleast for me.

Most people ar to stupid to develop their own sense of morality. SOme institution is required to spell it out. Obviously our govenrment hasn't got a clue so the church is the next in line.
