I am looking for an organisation to volunteer with. Am studying counselling and though I like to be helpful I would like some helpful experience to benefit my studies. Any suggestions?

As you are studying councelling I think you should find a local support group or a help-line Try looking in your local phone directory. They are likely to welcome you and any time (no matter how little) will be appreciated. Some in our group are students. I used to be a volunteer for Cruse and a Baby Grief Councelling group! I've suffered a lot of bereavement and they helped me when I needed it! I wanted tp repay it! I'm now on a Carers support line! I've been a carer and care-worker(still am) all my life! You have to be empathic, able to 'put yourself in their shoes', and never judgemental (Sometimes very hard) but mainly just a good listener. A general help-line service like the samaritans would give you a broader experience! It will be a good grounding If you want to be a councellor and there's no better way to learn a job than to do it!
Good luck in your endeavours and life!

Local hospital in the children's ward may have you read to children. In NICU, they may allow you to sit with an abandoned preemie.

Local Department of Human Services Agencies always needs someone to provide transportation or to work in volunteer services.

Become a Court-Appointed Special Advocate ("CASA") and be an advocate for neglected, abandoned and abused children.

Senior Centers and Nursing homes could use someone to read to or to visit the elderly. There is Meals on Wheels.

Volunteer at a school or a food bank. Serve meals at shelters. Counsel women at domestic violence shelters.

I had to give up my job as student adviser because I had a virulent form of cancer. However because I went into remission I volunteered to help Oxfam sorting and classifying books for their local secondhand bookshops. I soon realised that many people came into the shop because they were lonely and sought to fill their day with window shopping and reading because they did not see anybody all day. So when they could no longer come to town because they were incapacitated or ill, I started taking books to them, then I just visited them to give them some company for an hour or two. Some are now totally housebound or have been put in nursing homes and have no visitors, and I go to see them every week, one in particular every day to make sure she is alright as she can hardly walk and she is a prisonner in her own home. I have to think ahead of things to talk to them about that will open horizons for them and bring them out.
I have friends who visit prisoners in our local prison. Others help in schools, or youngsters who are school refusers.
I did it my way, but I suggest you call at your local volunteers' bureau, tell them of your strengths and they will make suggestions.
