I work in Maryland, so the laws might not be the same but since state adoption and fostercare are mandated by federal funds the rules seem to be the same in every state.

While there is no set maxium age at which you can adopt you must provide the state and the courts with proof from a doctor that you are healthy and capable of caring for that child until they reach adulthood.

I've approved a 70 yrs old great grandfather for custody of a 6 years old and denied a 34 yrs old with grave health concerns. Because some people may desperately want to care for a child but maybe incapable of physically providing the level of care they need.

If you are healthy, financially stable, have no recent criminal history and no one in your home has a history of violence feel free to contact your local Department of Social Services foster care unit. They can tell you where to apply for fostercare and/or adoption and will usually invite you to attend an interest meeting.
