I am buying a handgun for my own protection, and I was wondering if there are any good ways to secure it while keeping it readily (or moderately) accessible. I was considering keeping the gun in my nightstand but locking up the ammo and magazines.

I keep my Ruger 44 mag in my holster.... loaded. Keeping the gun in the nightstand is good at night. If you separate the ammo from the handgun, you may as well bury the weapon in the backyard; its useless.

I know everyone's terrified of 'what if my child gets it". I raised 4 daughters and taught each of them (and my wife) to use a weapon. I have 13 grandchildren and have begun the same with them as has their parents. I have carried a weapon since my early 20's. I am happy to report that I have never had it creep up on me at night, fire on me or a family member, nor wound any one of the many who has seen it. However, despite liberal claims seemingly to the contrary, it does not go for walks at night alone, it doesn't hold up liquor stores or innocent bystanders, nor has it shot a single rapper since we became mutual partners.

Guns are really for hunting purposes only and statistics say you have a better chance of not getting hurt in a situation where there is not a gun in the house. But a nice lockable storage safe that is bolted to the ground or something is the best. You should store ammo in a seperate location as the gun. In this case lock up the gun with a handgun safe screw it into the floor under your bed-(you can get ones with electronic number pads on them=no keys). And then keep the ammo in your night stand.

I use the Gun Vault:

http://www.gunvault.com/

It's a safe with an electronic lock that is easy to open, even in the dark. It makes for a great place to store a loaded gun securely, yet quick to access in an emergency.

And ignore that bit from another poster about "guns are more likely to kill a family member than protect them". It's bullshit. See the link below for a reference.

Best: on your person.

If in your nightstand, it won't do you any good if the magazine & ammo are locked up. At least load it before you go to bed at night.

there are these wall safes that mount in your wall that require an access code, usually 4 digits. once you type them in it opens and the firearm comes out attached to a holster. its pretty cool

Keep it under your pillow when sleeping than lock it up in daytime.

If you have small children, PLEASE buy a gun safe. Bass Pro and Walmart sell them. A couple hundred dollars if far cheaper than a life.
