I have a lil' dog and last night it was barking at something, someone, non-stop. It would then growl in fury, like it was ready to attack. I went out and checked what the hell was going on, but he would only run toward the thing and come back to me. I didn't see anything. Or maybe I was half-asleep, but there was nothing there. They're building a house next door. Was there maybe a bum sleeping in? Was it a spirit? I know he wasn't thirsty, because he would not drink. Would anyone have any idea why he was barking? Has this happened to you with your dog?

My dog has alerted me of noises in the yard and even mice moving under the house. The dogs senses are much more sensitive than ours.It would be hard to say what you dog was hearing or smelling. Hopefully, whatever it was won't be there tonight too.

Even if its separation anxiety there is a way to make it stop barking is to tell your friend to go outside while its barking but face the other way or dont make contact just ignore the dog. Tell her to say the command 'quiet' way till the dog becomes quiet once she does then tell your friend to pet it and give her the treat and praise her, and repeat the process when she barks again do the same thing again until your dog understands that being quiet is good. Also this will hellp your friend develop a bond with your dog so this should work in less than week if dont daily!

My guess that it was something there that you dog could see/smell that you couldn't and that through its annoying to have your dog barking it's good if he is alerting you to a threat. I have with my dog taught him "shhh..." when he barks I check out what he was barking at praise him by petting and using the "shhh..." command. This lets him know I have see it. It works with my dog.

As to the lady with the remove the voice box comment, if you don't like dogs, don't respond, people don't want nasty comments they are seeking help. YOUR idea is INHUMANE, and CRUEL. If that dogs barking saved you from a fire or a burglar you would think twice.

I hope you don't own any pets!

He may have seen a cat or another dog, someone may have been walking by. There could be many reasons why.

Can you bring him in at night? That may solve your problem.

My dog at times will not sleep at night. And will sit and watch me sleep. At times I think he is on edge because my son who is his previous owner was killed in a car crash. I think he does see him. But it is really
very hard to get any sleep or rest.

not sure, but if ya lived next door to me , a shot gun would put an end to it really quick. people just can't stand a barkin dog, just have his voice box removed before some one does it for ya!
