You need a passport to enter and exit the country, but not to travel from state to state.

Not within the United States, but when you travel outside the country. To fly to Canada, you need a passport, and by 2008 you will need to have a passport if you drive.

You need a passport to get into the US.

Once you are in the US, you do not need one to travel within its borders.

However, if you plan on flying anywhere, you will need a recognized photo id, and a passport is usually easiest. You won't go through customs or anything and you won't get a stamp, it will just be to show that you are who you say you are.

Once you are in the US, you don't need a passport to travel around the country. You will need a passport to enter the US, though.
