the lower the # of exemptions you choose, the more taxes taken out of your paycheck. for example, if you choose single-0, your employer will withhold taxes at the maximum level.

I believe you are referring to the W-4. That is the form to tell your employer how much to withhold. I recommend using the IRS withholding calculator linked below to determine the number of allowances that will match your withholding to your actual tax liability.
