My brother-in-law has a kidney stone 9mm in diameter. The doctor said that it is in a location where they can't break it up into smaller pieces and he has to pass the stone the natural way. Has anyone in here passed a stone that size before and how painful is it really? What can you take for pain? Is Vicodin effective in helping with the pain when passing the stone? Advice please!

I've had 14. The larget was 6 mm and it started to apss before I could have lithotripsy. They did the litho before it got all the way out, but it was EXCRUCIATING. They generally would do suregery of some sort (a ureteroscopy if nothing else) on one that is 6mm or larger because there is a risk of completely blocking the kidney and causing hydronephrosis. I would see another urologist if they are trying to make him pass it naturally. He should be in the hospital until he passes a stone of that size. Vicodin is not strong enough for that type of pain. I've always been given Percocet or Mepergan... for the larger ones they put me in the hospiatl and gave me Demerol in my IV.

I have had 4 kidney stones and it is the most terrible pain that I have ever had. The worst part of the pain is when the stone is passing through the small points of the urinary system. The actual "coming out at the end" is actually a relief and not as painful as you would imagine. He should drink plenty of water and take a strong pain killer until it passes.

kidney stone pain is the only male equivalent to giving birth. think of a small straw passing a rough rock.
vicodin does not really help pain as it is a narcotic. it is prescribed as a painkiller, though. drinking alot of water is recommended, make sure he uses a strainer each time he pees to catch the stones or stones, and if the pain is too severe -get him to the ER.

Excruciating pain. The worst you can imagine. Passing the stone is difficult and the ureters have a tendency to spasm. Which adds a whole new meaning to the word "pain."

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.

They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!

This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.

It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.
