A professional Army is an army of volunteers, such as the US Army and the British Army. Additionally, it's officers (and NCOs) are required to seek continuing education throughout their careers. While the casual observer might not be aware of it, Army Officers and many Sergeants Major are highly educated individuals. To even be commissioned in the US Army, a person must have a 4 year degree. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Officers also must attend their basic branch course (e.g. Infantry Officers Basic Course), The Captain's Career Course, Command and General Staff College, and eventually, the War College at Fort Levenworth. If any officer hopes to achieve a rank higher than major, they must go to graduate school. This all goes back to Samuel Huntington's definition of a profession. According to Huntington, a profession is essential to the functioning of a civil society and must require continuing education throughout a career (e.g. the Military, Doctors, Lawyers, Teachers, and Clergy). Many people take great offense to this definition, since it excludes many other important jobs, like police, architects, firefighters, nurses, etc. It's not meant to be insulting, it's simply meant to define a term (profession) that is often used way too liberally. Not the American army thats for sure!!

If you want professionalism the the British army would be the best. For a start alot of American soldiers are very young and immature which is why they have a bad reputation.

I find that teaching in smaller numbers like the British army do its more intense no messing around we take this seriously, its our job, career and we honor our country to defend it!

In 1939 Poland thought they had a professional army. They even had plans to advance to Berlin.
