I did a search for education using the Oregonian's job search tool and it found 814 jobs (http://jobs.oregonlive.com/js.php?view=&lookid=oregonlive&q=education). It confirmed what I suspected - that good teachers are always in need in the metropolitian area around Portland.

Good luck - it's a great city to live in.

The Oregon State Bar is located in Lake Oswego but that area is very very pricey. You should live around Tigard or Beaverton area. Those are both nice. They have good schools a lot of businesses but it's a nice suburban area that is also a close drive to Portland. It only takes about 15 minutes to go from Tigard to down town Portland and only about 10 min from Beaverton on the freeway with no traffic. With traffic it can take longer (like 30 min to an hour). If you want to live more in the country with the fastest and least traffic route, try Scappoose (population around 6,000). It's about 25 minutes always because there is never any traffic in that direction. Welcome to Oregon. It's very beautiful here in the Summer so I suggest you move here then. Good luck!

Hi

I'm a high school teacher and just moved to Portland last summer without having a job lined up. I was able to get two job offers and a significant number of the people hired by my district (Beaverton) were from out of state.

All of these people seem down on the educational system up here, but I feel the schools are pretty good. We have students at my high school going to Ivy League schools and I have found the overall situation good. There are many high quality public schools where the community really supports the students. Yeah, there is a lack of money, but when do school ever have enough funding?

The job market is good here. The downside is the HIGH turnover due to POOR funding and school conditions. My oldest son (sophomore) was told BY A TEACHER that his grades really don't matter much since the schools WON'T hold him back due to funding. I HATE OREGON SCHOOLS but hey......I would GLADLY welcome a new teacher that actually WANTS to make a difference in my childrens lives. I have 3 kids in school (Kindergarten, 5th and 10th grades) and Parkers Kindergarten teacher is the ONLY teacher that I have seen really CARE about what she does and the impact she has on young lives.

Oregon schools have been in a funding crisis for about 15 years now. Teachers have a very hard time finding jobs.

honestly Portland , Oregon is the laughing stock of public education in america. They could use all the help they can get so i'm not discouraging you,but be forwarned peole in Oregon in genral care to spend as little as possible on thier children.

look , I mean it's such a known fact check out the movie Mr. hollands opus" made completely to point out Portland's lack of education commitment.
