The surname is still somewhat frequent in Germany, particularly in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania and Hesse:

Sounds german. Westen means west or western. Berg or bergen means mountains. So generally I would think it means a person who comes from the western mountains.

It could also be an americanization of westenburgher which means person from a western town.

It might be German. My grandma's last name was Westberg (it's kinda the same as Westenberger), and she was German.
