I live and work in central Africa and many Africans here believe in things like ghosts, spirits and black magic. Many of the locals are also highly religious and accept the existence of god without question. Therefore I was thinking that in general, is it fair to say that Christianity and belief in the Bible in the modern world are most successful in the poorer regions of the world and where educational standards are low.

No, it means that there are more believers in any type of religion in nations where the education system sucks. Like sub-Sarahan nations, or the United States.

While there are of course exceptions, the average person in a poor/uneducated region is more likely to be more religious. Now, some say this shows that smarter people are less likely to accept God. However, as someone who has had the opportunity to preach in many areas, some poor, and some affluent, there are a number of other factors to note:

A person in a poor area who isn't interested in listening to you is far more likely to talk for a few minutes, be friendly, offer you a refreshment, etc. A person in an affluent area will, more often than not, offer you a swift and rude exit.

Does this mean wealth/education also make you a less friendly human being? Really, the effect is simple... The more money/education people have, the more content they become with their situtation, the more they are convinced they're on the right course, and the less likely they are to be willing to switch their priorities. Jesus said it was easier for a camel to get through the eye of a needle, than a rich man to get into the kingdom of God... From then until now it has not changed... Most people who have money will put it first, and accept a set of beliefs that makes them feel not guilty about it.

Shocker, God has a heart for the poor?! Who would have thought? People who are desperate seeking and finding Christ? Amazing! What exactly is your point? Are you claiming (yet again) that Christians must be less educated than non believers? Since I as a Christian know that through Christ I'm saved, that makes me quite a bit smarter than a non-believer.

I think that often, people who are poorer tend to be more humble because they are compelled to be more humble. Humility is the fertile ground where God can work miracles in the hearts of his children. And these people are blessed because of their humility.

Think how much the greater it is for a person to learn to be humble when not in such humble circumstances.

The meek and humble have a special place in Christs' Heart and our neglect of the poorest of the poor will surely come back to haunt humanity

My husband and I both have advanced college degrees and are not anywhere near a poverty level, and we are devout Christians. I don't think these things are related at all.
